Races at Ascot have been a tradition since 1711 when the Racecourse was founded by Queen Anne. Until 1945 there was only one meeting each year – known as the Royal Meeting. The Royal Meeting still continues as a five-day event in June. Since 1945 other events have been added to the schedule at Ascot which is near Windsor (the site of the famous castle) in Berkshire England.
Hats continue to be a tradition at Ascot. There is a fine tradition of being properly dressed for Ascot at least in certain areas of the course. At the Gold Cup the focus is very much on ladies hats. How marvelous!
Here is a very good video on You Tube Ascot Ladies Day! It’s a hat thing!! showing off hats at Ascot set to the tune of the Ascot Gavotte from the movie My Fair Lady. You can find the dvd and cd and other stuff from the movie at Amazon. just go the the search box on this site.
