The Lord Mayor's Show in London England is an annual parade that dates back several hundred years. Each year a Mayor is appointed as the administrative head of a square mile in the City of London. This is not to be confused with the Mayor of London, an elected official who is head of the Greater London Authority. The event celebrates the swearing in of an official that had a great deal more authority in past times - the tradition has continued.
The Show used to be a day at the end of October, then on November 9 and in 1959, another change was made and is now held on the second Saturday in November.
The plate is from The Illustrated London News from 1893. The Lord Mayor at the parade on November 9, 1893 was one George Tyler. As you can see it was an event where, if you were well to do, you can wear your best hat and show off.
The following is a video of a recent Lord Mayor's Show from Time - spot the hats!
