A Dunce or a Wizard - you decide
She is reading a copy of Western Family magazine. The visual is taken from part of a page from a booklet sent to distributors of the magazine in 1945. I could not find out much information on the magazine. It appears to be defunct. A few copies of the magazine have been on sale on e-bay.
The magazine gives a gal a lot of know-how about her particular racket - which is keeping house. To say that the contents of the booklet The Art of Loving Customers is politically inappropriate in today's environment is an understatement. It is full of drawings of scantily clad models with comments about the business of displaying the magazine, primarily in Supermarkets.
Is the hat in the picture a dunce's hat (worn by stupid students as a punishment for slothfulness)? I did some reading on this. Apparently a conical hat was adopted in many sects as a sign of wisdom. It looks like a funnel focusing knowledge from the apex to the head. It is used as a Wizard hat (although a brim is often added - similar to a Witches hat - as in Harry Potter movies). Well you be the judge. Reading the Western Family magazine could make you a genius in housework. A woman's place is in the home. Humbug I say!
Here is an interesting article on conical hats. They could be a good thing?
